What it is for
MQTT lets devices talk through a broker: one device publishes a message to a topic, and every device that subscribed to that topic receives it. Smart home systems such as Home Assistant use it, and so do industrial sensors.
Free public brokers such as HiveMQ's are great for learning, and MQTT dashboard apps turn your topics into gauges, switches and charts in minutes.
Once you know MQTT, you can connect your projects to almost any smart home system.
Tips
- Start every topic with a unique name, for example eementor/your-name-123.
- Only send harmless data to a public broker; anyone can read it.
- Use the # wildcard to see every topic below one name while you test.
